Week of March 9, 2025: Writing Letters and Dumping Billionaires
I'm continuing to write letters through Vote Forward, an organization that asks that volunteers share why they vote in letters to people who are less likely to vote. All 209,000 letters for the Wisconsin Supreme Court race have already been adopted! I've completed 25 of the 100 that I adopted.
I deleted my Facebook account a long time ago, and deleted Twitter sometime after it was taken over. More recently, I deleted my Instagram, and to celebrate the February 28th boycott, I ended my Amazon Prime membership. Actions like this often feel tiny. What's one user to these companies? But they are only loyal to their bottom line; the only way to make them better is to show them you won't give them your attention, data, or money anymore when they behave badly. The more of us that do it, the more it shows them what will and won't be tolerated. Instagram was hard to give up. I followed a lot of local businesses and organizations, and I do feel less "in the know." However, I won't give Zuckerberg more time and data, and I encourage you to do the same. If you need to scratch that social media itch, get BlueSky. Or maybe better yet, don't get sucked into a new online sinkhole of time that makes you feel like you're doing something when you're really just moving your finger around on a phone.
